Host Lock
How Destiny and Journey came to the realm. One afternoon, one phantom node buried under a university campus, and a terminal that already knew her name.
Scene 1: The Morning Crash
The light filtering through Destiny's bedroom blinds was low, casting long shadows across her desk. On the wooden surface sat a laptop, its screen dark.
At 7:00 AM sharp, her alarm clock blared.
Destiny groaned, slapping her hand onto the clock to silence it. She sat up, rubbed her eyes, and walked straight over to her desk. Flipping her laptop open, she brought up her trading charts. A steep red drop cut straight down the grid on her screen — another rugpull had wiped out her position overnight. She gritted her teeth, staring at the zeroed-out balance. She didn't bother digging into the contract logs or tracing the wallets right now; the damage was already done.
The bedroom door pushed open, and Journey — two years younger and heading into her own college classes — leaned against the doorframe.
"Destiny, you're going to be late," Journey said, stepping into the room. "We need to leave soon if we want to beat the campus traffic."
"I'm awake, I'm awake," Destiny sighed, closing her laptop and slipping it into her backpack. "Let me grab my coat and we can head out."
Scene 2: The Network Anomaly
By mid-afternoon, Destiny was sitting near the back of a crowded lecture hall while the professor's voice echoed off the concrete walls, droning through a slide deck on basic network architecture.
Destiny opened her laptop to take notes. As soon as she connected to the university Wi-Fi, her automated diagnostic script — a tool she'd been patching together with AI coding prompts for weeks, and had only gotten running the night before — threw its first real alert in her terminal.
[ALERT]: High-frequency packet routing detected on unlisted local gateway.
[SIGNAL ORIGIN]: Sub-level 3 / Maintenance Sector C.
Destiny frowned, tapping her trackpad. The gateway wasn't on any of the university's published routing tables. It was a phantom node buried deep beneath the campus, pulling massive hidden bandwidth in rhythmic spikes. The diagnostic visualization on her screen rendered the traffic spikes as steep red drops — almost identical to the predatory extraction bots she tracked in crypto.
When the bell rang, she headed for the library — not to finish her coursework, but to keep the script running on something that shouldn't exist.
Scene 3: The Library Interruption
The silence of the university library at 6:58 PM was suffocating. Destiny sat at her usual corner desk, staring at her screen.
A hand tapped her shoulder, making her flinch.
"Destiny, come on," Journey whispered, slinging her backpack over one shoulder. She looked down at her older sister with a mix of exhaustion and worry. "It's practically seven. You've been staring at code all day. Let's just head home."
Destiny let out a heavy breath, her fingers hovering over the keys before she snapped the laptop shut. "Yeah... okay. You're right. Let's go."
They packed up and walked down the quiet carpeted aisle, pushed through the heavy double doors, and started down the stairwell. Three steps down, Destiny's phone began to vibrate violently in her palm — a high-frequency pulse, fast and even, against her skin.
Destiny pulled up her custom network scanner — the same script, cut down to run on her phone. The signal strength bar was pinned to maximum, pulsing in synchronization with an unlisted gateway address.
"Wait." Destiny stopped dead on the stairs.
"What is it?" Journey asked, taking a step back up toward her.
"My scanner... it's picking up an active connection running the same extraction pattern that wiped my position." Destiny pointed down the stairwell. "And the host device isn't remote. It's right under us."
Scene 4: The Relic Gateway
Before Journey could protest, Destiny was already heading down the stairs, her sneakers squeaking against the concrete steps. Journey cursed under her breath and scrambled after her.
The door at the bottom should have been badge-locked. The reader hung off the wall by its wires, and the strike plate was bent outward, screws torn through the frame. Someone had forced it open, and not recently.
Sub-Level 3 was the campus server room — a cold, dimly lit labyrinth of humming black racks and flashing green and yellow LEDs. The chill in the air bit through their hoodies as they waded deeper into the rows of high-density hardware. Destiny followed the signal strength on her screen until she reached the back wall, where several decommissioned, dusty server chassis had been shoved aside.
Behind them sat a heavy steel door, ajar. A strip of faded stencil across it read MAINT. SECTOR C.
Through the narrow gap, a low metallic hum vibrated through the floor. A sickly green CRT glow spilled out into the aisle, accompanied by erratic flashes of violet light that cast long, dancing shadows across the servers.
Journey shrank back, her hand catching Destiny's sleeve. "Destiny... what is this place? This isn't part of the campus."
"Stay behind me," Destiny whispered.
She pushed the steel door open. The room beyond was raw concrete, poured and never finished — no drywall, no conduit, nothing added since the basement went in. In the center of the chamber stood a massive circular archway of smooth, dark stone, covered in geometric engravings. The center of the ring wasn't empty — it rippled with a swirling vortex of violet energy that made the air smell of ozone.
Directly in front of the archway sat a metal desk holding an ancient green-phosphor CRT monitor and a heavy mechanical keyboard, its keycaps worn pale where someone's fingers had sat. Glowing on the monitor was a terminal prompt:
GATE ACTIVE.
AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED.
ENTER HOST KEY: _
Journey stared at the stone ring, her voice trembling. "Destiny... is that... a portal?"
Destiny didn't answer. She walked slowly up to the desk, drawn in, green text reflecting in her eyes.
Journey stayed where she was, watching the light move. "It's beautiful," she said, and sounded surprised at herself.
The signal on her phone was syncing directly with the terminal's hardware clock — and as the handshake completed, her scanner filled in a field that had sat blank all day.
HOST: DESTINY
Journey saw it too. "Why does it know your name?"
Destiny reached out and placed her fingers over the mechanical keyboard.
"Destiny, wait! Don't touch it!" Journey cried out.
Destiny didn't hesitate. It already knew her name. She only had to type it.
d - e - s - t - i - n - y
She hit ENTER.
The CRT monitor flashed white. Lines of green system output cascaded down the screen at impossible speed:
KEY ACCEPTED.
HOST LOCK CONFIRMED: DESTINY.
EXECUTING RECOVERY PROTOCOL...
The violet vortex inside the stone archway exploded in size, turning from a soft glow into a roaring gravitational vacuum. The air pressure in the room plummeted.
Destiny was closest. The force took her off the floor before she could turn, dragging her backward toward the ring, her hands still on the keys.
"Destiny!" Journey threw herself forward and caught her sister's wrist with both hands, sneakers skidding across the smooth concrete. "I've got you! Hold on!"
The gravitational pull of the gate was absolute. The violet light expanded, swallowing the terminal, the desk, and the walls of the server room until there was nothing left but blinding white and violet energy. With a final, violent surge, Journey was pulled off her feet, and both sisters were dragged into the vortex.
